Is your Shopify store visible to AI agents?
If someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a product you sell, does your store come up? If they ask Google AI Mode to find and buy it directly, can it?
These aren't hypothetical questions anymore. Since March 2026, Shopify automatically activated Agentic Storefronts for every store on the platform. Your products are already being syndicated to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini unless you've explicitly opted out. You probably didn't know this was happening.
What agentic commerce actually means for your store
AI agents can now do more than recommend products. With Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol, developed alongside Google, an agent can search your catalog, build a cart, apply discounts, and complete a checkout, all inside a chat conversation without the customer ever visiting your storefront.
Google already has this running with select merchants. Microsoft Copilot launched checkout integration with Shopify in January 2026. The volume is still small, but the infrastructure is live and growing.
The part most merchants miss
AI agents don't see your store the way a human does. They don't notice your homepage design, your banner images, or your color scheme. They read your data: product titles, descriptions, attributes, and structured information about your business.
If your product descriptions are vague, your titles are generic, or your catalog is missing key attributes, agents will either skip your products or represent them inaccurately to potential buyers. A product listed as "Blue Dress" tells an agent almost nothing. "Women's Navy Wrap Dress, Midi Length, Available in S-XL" gives it something to work with when a customer asks for a specific type of dress.
Three things to do now
First, check your Agentic Storefront in the Shopify admin. Go to Sales Channels and look for the Agentic channel. You can see how many products are synced and whether the channel is active.
Second, install the Shopify Knowledge Base app from the Agentic dashboard. This free first-party app feeds verified information directly to AI agents about your business. When someone asks an AI assistant about your return policy, your shipping options, or whether you offer gift wrapping, the agent pulls the answer from your Knowledge Base instead of guessing. Fill it with the questions your customers ask most often.
Third, review your product descriptions. Write them conversationally, as if answering a question. What is included? Who is it for? What makes it different? Specific and complete descriptions give agents more to work with when matching your products to what shoppers are actually asking for.

The bigger picture
How people discover products is changing. Search is still important, but a growing share of product discovery is happening through AI conversations. Your store's visibility in that channel depends entirely on the quality and completeness of your product data, not your design.
The good news is that most of the work is already done for you. Shopify built the infrastructure and activated it automatically. What's left is making sure the data that flows through it actually represents your store well.
